As an essential part of the Fire District’s continuity of emergency response operations, the
Mechanic I, under the guidance of the District’s Fleet Manager, is responsible for maintaining and 
assisting in the repair of the Fire District’s fleet of over 70 vehicles and Fire/EMS apparatus. 
This role involves completing necessary maintenance, inspections, and repairs, as well as 
accurately documenting maintenance and repair activities, purchase orders, invoicing processing, 
and quality assurance and improvement.

The Mechanic I performs a variety of semi-skilled tasks related to the regular inspection, 
diagnosis, maintenance, and repair of the fleet. They follow the maintenance and repair schedules 
and inspection processes established by the Fleet Manager, ensuring adherence to fleet maintenance, 
quality assurance, and safety protocols. The Mechanic I also assists the Fleet Manager in 
developing fleet program reports and managing fleet management software.

Additionally, the Mechanic I attends specialized training to enhance their skills in fleet 
management and the maintenance and repair of fleet vehicles and apparatus. While incumbents may not 
perform all listed duties and responsibilities, they may be required to take on additional
or different tasks, including facility maintenance, to meet the evolving needs of the District.

 

Salary and Benefit Information
•    $61,231 - $73,720 Annual Salary Employee/Employer paid Public Employees Retirement System 
(PERS) or $51,156 - $61,591 Annual Salary Employer paid PERS.
•    Annual “steps” of 6% for the first 4 years, plus eligibility for union-negotiated COLA in 
future collective bargaining agreements.
•    Comprehensive benefits package includes 100% employer-paid health care premiums for employee 
and dependent(s), 13-paid holidays, Nevada PERS, longevity pay, up to 100% District-paid employee 
post-retirement health care premiums, and competitive leave accruals and buyouts.
•    40 hours per week, 4 ten-hour or 5 eight-hour shifts of incumbent’s preference.
•    Take home vehicle depending on callback availability and location of residence from District 
boundaries.
Minimum Qualifications/Conditions of Employment: (current valid certifications)
•  Graduation from High School or a GED certificate.
•  Two years of progressively responsible experience performing automotive and/or equipment 
maintenance or repair that includes specialized training in automotive or engine technology.
•  Possess at least one ASE Automotive and/or Heavy/Medium Truck certification(s) or obtain at 
least one within 1 year of hire.
•  Possess a Nevada Class A or B commercial driver’s license or obtain an “F” endorsement
within 6 months of hire.
•  Have own maintained tools including a variety of hand and air, and/or battery powered tools that 
are appropriate for maintaining and repairing Light and Medium duty fleet and Medium/Heavy Trucks, 
and appropriate toolboxes to store and lock tools.
Desired Qualifications
•   Previous experience with fire apparatus, pumps and rescue equipment, and ambulances.
•    One year of experience (or specialized training) in maintenance and repair of buildings and 
grounds such as carpentry, plumbing, electrical or other semi-skilled trades.

Conditions of Employment:
•   Pass a pre-employment drug screen, background investigation, and medical physical.
•   Submit a DMV driving record printout.
•   Completion of 12-month probation.
